En réponse à une demande de l'organisation populaire haïtienne KOFAVIV, des équipes de chercheurs de MADRE, de la International Women's Human Rights Clinic de la CUNY School of Law, de la NYU Global Justice Clinic et du UC Hastings Center for Gender & Refugee Studies ont mené une enquête en Haïti de novembre à décembre 2011.

In response to a request from the Haitian grassroots organization KOFAVIV, teams of researchers from MADRE, the International Women’s Human Rights Clinic at CUNY School of Law, NYU Global Justice Clinic and the UC Hastings Center for Gender & Refugee Studies conducted a fact-finding investigation in Haiti from November to December 2011.

Ces dernières années, le Mexique est devenu un pays de transit et de destination non seulement pour les migrants d'Amérique centrale voyageant vers le nord, mais aussi pour des milliers d'Haïtiens faisant la longue traversée depuis Haïti, vers l’Amérique du Sud et, éventuellement, par voie terrestre vers le Mexique ou les États-Unis. Les Haïtiens ont fui leur pays depuis le tremblement de terre du 12 janvier 2010, qui a provoqué l'instabilité politique, l'effondrement de l'état de droit et la violence.

Only in recent years has violence against women begun to receive international attention as both a public health and human rights concern. This article argues that the right to be free from sexual violence is a fundamental component of the right to health, and the need is particularly acute in post-disaster contexts. This article uses post-earthquake Haiti as a case study to illustrate conditions for women and girls who suffer daily threats of physical, emotional, economic, and social harm in ways that have no direct parallels for their mal counterparts.

This article contextualizes and documents the issue of increased sexual violence following the earthquake disaster that devasted the country and its people. It identifies the different obstacles to enforcing women’s human rights in Haiti and proposes different strategies for law enforcement and how Haitian officials and the international community can enforce the protection of women and children from sexual violence. By employing a comprehensive rights-based approach, it analyses the role of international lawyers enforcing women’s rights in post-earthquake Haiti. (Summary by Mouka)

This article analyses the use of rape in Haiti historically as a tool of political repression before analysing the issue of rape in a post disaster setting following the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti. Bookey describes his work in the Rape Accountability and Prevention (RAP) project, putting forth a detailed account of rape victims’ experiences and the deep physical and psychological effects on women and girls.

This is the experience of a Haitian woman living in Tapachula, Mexico, where she and thousands like her have voyaged through seven to eleven different countries, either via Brazil or Chile after fleeing Haiti, only to find themselves isolated, unsupported and marginalized in profound ways. A city near the border with Guatemala, Tapachula is an in-between place for Haitian migrants as they wait for their papers to travel elsewhere, some aiming to seek asylum in the United States.
