Adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) have been linked with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in high-income countries, but evidence from low-income countries like Haiti is limited.
The authors investigated the cross-sectional association between APO and prevalent CVD using the Haiti CVD Cohort.

Data on women’s reproductive health in settings facing extreme poverty are limited. We describe the reproductive health characteristics across the life course of women living in urban Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and identify factors associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes (APO).

Since 2018, escalating armed gang violence in Haiti has caused thousands of deaths and kidnappings, the collapse of essential services, and the internal displacement of over 1.3 million people. This study documents the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and associated factors among internally displaced people due to armed gang violence, providing essential evidence to inform clinical care and guide targeted humanitarian and mental health interventions.

Improving perinatal engagement in HIV care is critical to prevent disease progression and transmission. In Haiti and other low-resource settings, poverty contributes substantially to poor perinatal HIV outcomes. Cash transfers are a promising intervention that may alleviate poverty and improve perinatal HIV outcomes through economic and psychological pathways. To inform the design of an unconditional cash transfer intervention, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 pregnant and postpartum women with HIV receiving care at St. Boniface Hospital in rural Haiti 12/2023-5/2024.

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) are the epicenter of the global HIV epidemic. The FANMI trial is an unblinded randomized-controlled trial which evaluated the effectiveness of a community-based model of cohort HIV care vs. standard clinic-based care among AGYW living with HIV in Haiti. Participants ages 16–24 years were randomized 1:1 to FANMI vs. standard care. In the FANMI intervention, cohorts of 5–10 participants attended monthly sessions in a community center for integrated HIV clinical care, group counseling, and social activities led by the same provider.

In Haiti, surviving pregnancy and childbirth is especially tenuous for young women, who are already marginalized. One of the four leading causes of death for women 20–24 years old is pregnancy- or childbirth-related. An important gap remains regarding youth perspectives of maternal health and well-being within their communities.

Haitian women face heightened risk of contracting HIV and encounter challenges in accessing quality care due to sociocultural and economic barriers. Stigma compounds these challenges, especially for pregnant women living with HIV. Globally, HIV-related stigma is a recognized barrier to testing, treatment, and prevention, contributing to low testing rates and substandard treatment and care. This study examines sources and origins of stigma that impact pregnant women’s access to and experience with sexual and maternal healthcare.

Racial and ethnic minority women with HIV experience higher levels of HIV-related stigma, have poorer adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), and lower viral suppression rates than men and white women with HIV.

Cet article examine l’évolution entre 1994 et 2016 de la proportion de mères adolescentes, du taux de fécondité des adolescentes, du nombre moyen d’enfants nés durant l’adolescence (descendance finale adolescente) et de la descendance finale "totale" comparée entre les femmes ayant été mères adolescentes et celles qui ne l’ont pas été. Il explore aussi les profils des mères adolescentes ainsi que les facteurs associés à la fécondité précoce à Haïti. L’étude se base sur l’analyse des données des 5 enquêtes démographiques et de santé que le pays a réalisées entre 1994 et 2016.

Community-driven research is important in studies involving women as knowledge holders, as it elevates their voices and agency. This case study adapts the concept of “translational research” following an ethnobotanical survey of Haitian women in New York City (NYC). Moving beyond documenting medicinal plants for women’s health, Haitian participants in community centers were engaged in transforming research findings into practical tools through focus group discussions, in which they re-evaluated and refined the outcomes based on their traditional knowledge and preferences.
