Résumé
Résumé :

This paper aims to analyze how the consequences of natural disasters affect gender relations in socioeconomic terms. To meet this objective, we quantitatively analyzed the effect of the earthquake that occurred in Haiti in 2010 based on data from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) developed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). To measure the impact of the 2010 earthquake we used the differences in differences (DID) technique.

Résumé
Résumé :

Background: Haiti’s 2010 earthquake devastated social, health, and economic infrastructure and left 2 million persons homeless. Over 6 years later 61,000 people remain displaced, most lacking protection, services, and durable solutions. Structural contexts elevate risks of gender-based violence (GBV) targeting internally displaced (ID) girls and women. Objective: We used an intersectionality framework to explore lived experiences and understanding of violence among ID young men and women in Leogane, Haiti.

Résumé
Résumé :

Natural disasters, such as hurricanes, often negatively affect the economic wellbeing of affected individuals. Under such conditions, women may engage in transactional sexual behaviors in order to compensate for lost income and provide for their households. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between hurricane impact and transactional sex and if this relationship was moderated, or mediated, through economic factors.

Résumé
Résumé :

The novel is about the coming of age of a young Haitian immigrant, Sophie Caco, who leaves Haiti to join her mother in the United States. The novel moves between two settings, New York and Haiti. Through Sophie and her female generational line (her mother, her aunt, and her grandmother) the novel articulates the struggle of Haitian and Haitian American women with rigid patriarchal values, and forms of sexual abuse that have been internalized by the women themselves.

Résumé
Résumé :

This article provides a close reading of Marie-Célie Agnant’s Un alligator nommé Rosa (2007) and Femmes au temps des carnassiers (2015), novels that examine the range of women’s experiences during the Duvalier dictatorship. Inspired by real lives, they look back with a critical eye, offering multigenerational perspectives on the era and its aftermath. Agnant reimagines women who wield, abuse, defer to, contest, and resist power, as well as those who are coerced into silence in order to survive.

Résumé
Résumé :

This article begins the study of the under-explored yet fundamental role of andikape (disability) mobility—the expression of subjectivity and the exercise of rights by the disabled—in Haitian history and society. It considers how recent tragic events in the Soud (Deaf) community fostered increased, collaborative mobilization of the moun andikape (the disabled) and related organizations to advocate for greater social inclusion, the securing of rights, and the expression of subjectivity.

Given that condom use is not directly under a woman's control, the sexual division of power may play an important role in sexual behavior among pregnant women. We assessed the influence of factors related to the theory of gender and power (e.g., relationship power, abuse history, and sexual communication) on sexual behavior (e.g., two or more partners in the year prior to pregnancy, condom use, condom-use intentions, and STI diagnosis) among 196 pregnant women recruited from five community dispensaries in rural Haiti.
