Résumé
Résumé :

Vulnerability is a central concept in humanitarian aid. Discussions of vulnerability in disaster response literature and guidelines for humanitarian aid range from considerations of a universal human vulnerability, to more nuanced examinations of how particular characteristics render individuals more or less at risk. Despite its frequent use, there is a lack of clarity about how vulnerability is conceptualized and how it informs operational priorities in humanitarian assistance.

Résumé
Résumé :

Maternal mortality is an ongoing health crisis in Haïti. Estimated at 523 deaths per 100,000 live births it is the highest rate in Latin America and the Caribbean. There are many factors that influence the dire status of disadvantaged pregnant women in Haiti, such as lack of prenatal care, unsafe and unsanitary deliveries, long walking distance to seek medical care, and inability to pay medical fees. Conditions of ill health such as high maternal mortality can be taken as clear indications of poverty, proxies for the lack of development.

Résumé
Résumé :

Haitian women have proven to be key actors in sustaining their families during conditions of economic decline and poverty. Information on the impact of poverty within the household suggests that women have carried a greater burden than men in terrns of family maintenance. In part, this is due to the loss of jobs in the formal sector which has affected men to a greater extent than women.

Résumé
Résumé :

Maternal health is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period (WHO, 2016). Maternal health is a very important determinant of Haiti’s familial, educational, economic, and environmental development. One key to maternal health is family planning which can empower women to fulfill their familial and community roles. Family planning through contraception offers women the opportunity to gain time between child births by deciding when to get pregnant in relation to their other life obligations.

Résumé
Résumé :

This Article examines women's and girls' struggles in the aftermath of the Haitian earthquake. In particular, it focuses on the grievous conditions in the displacement camps that foster gender-based violence and abuse, often perpetrated by members of armed groups or prison escapees. Indeed, the lack of lighting, private sanitary facilities, secure shelters, and police patrols in the encampment areas endanger women's and girls' safety.
