Ten years ago, on January 12, at 16:53 in the afternoon, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti. The country was left in shambles. So was the women’s movement. Three of its most prominent leaders lost their lives in the earthquake, and the implementation of gender policies came to a halt. This CMI Brief explores the challenges facing the women’s cause in Haiti after the earthquake and provides recommendations for how to get it back on track.

Objective Although illegal abortion is believed to be widely practised in Haiti, few data exist on such practices. We aimed to learn about illegal abortion access, methods, and perceived barriers to abortion-related care. Additionally, we aimed to identify the proportion of unscheduled antepartum visits to a public hospital that were attributable to unsafe abortion in Cap Haitien, Haiti.

Women and girls are more adversely affected than men both during and in the aftermath of rapid-onset natural disasters. The international community has repeatedly called for women's voices to be included in relief and reconstruction efforts in both conflict and natural disaster settings to reduce this vulnerability. In this article we highlight one segment of a situational analysis used as groundwork for developing an intervention to address gender-based violence (GBV).

Trends in the proportion of women reporting ever having perpetrated physical intimate partner violence (IPV) and factors associated with such IPV in Haiti between 2000 and 2012 were analyzed. We used datasets from Haitian couples in the 2000, 2005, and 2012 Demographic and Health Surveys. Physical IPV was assessed by the Conflict Tactics Scale. Trends were tested with the Cochrane–Armitage test. Women’s and spouses’ factors associated with physical IPV perpetration by women were estimated using binomial multivariable regressions.

French women writing from 1790 to 1825 responded to uprisings in Haiti in 1791 by contextualizing violence in relation to the horrors of slavery. The juxtaposition of "Black" and "Terror" echoes the similar juxtaposition in The Black Jacobins, which the Trinidadian writer C. L. R. James published in 1938.
