The following analysis is based primarily on field experience in food assistance coordination in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, during the months immediately following the January 2010 earthquake (January through September, 2010). These experiences, in addition to further fieldwork conducted from January to February 2011, form the basis of a Master’s thesis focusing on gender-based programming in post-earthquake Haiti (completed in July 2011). The below is a short summary of ideas treated therein.

“Let Us Forge One Path Together”: Gender, Class, and Political Subjectivities in a Haitian Popular Neighborhood

Over sixty years after the introduction of women’s suffrage and nearly forty years after the uneven institutionalization of representative democracy, the majority of Haitian women face mounting challenges to maintaining their livelihoods and playing more prominent roles in politics. This dissertation advances an understanding of poor urban women’s collective potential and the challenges to their self-making as agents of change.

Haitian women and girls experience multiple forms of violence on the Dominican-Haitian border whether as migrants, cross-border traders, or displaced persons following the 2010 Haiti earthquake. International media have drawn attention to sexual violence against women in internal displacement camps in Haiti, unintentionally diverting the public gaze from other, equally grave scenarios, such as the situation of women and girls who cross the border.
Gender Survey: Life-Saving Interventions for Women and Girl in Haiti

The quantitative Gender Survey described in this document was part of a larger evaluation and exploration of gender in Leogane and Carrefour, two communes (counties) near to Port-au- Prince that were among those most heavily impacted by the January 12th 2010 earthquake. Following the catastrophe CARE initiated emergency and supportive relief efforts in the communes, including sanitation, health and cash for work programs.
The Gendered Space of Capabilities and Functionings: Lessons from Haitian Community-Based Organizations

Different frameworks for building capabilities result in different material outcomes for women in four Haitian community-based organizations: two mixed-gender versus two women’s organizations. This study shows that frameworks deployed by the women’s organizations pay attention to gendered strategic interests by enhancing capabilities and functionings that communities and individuals value. Their frameworks resembled Nussbaum’s (2011, Creating Capabilities: The Human Development Approach.

Several prominent contemporary Francophone women writers have embraced activism in compelling forms. In her written creations, Maïssa Bey from Algeria has continually called attention to the lack of women's rights in her homeland; she has also initiated writing workshops for women to reflect and express themselves. Fatou Diome, who left Senegal for Strasbourg, has shed light in her work on racism and sexism that African immigrants often face in Europe, and she has created an association in her homeland to help individuals become financially solvent.
“Give Me Proof”: A Covert but Coercive Form of Non-partner Sexual Violence Contributing to Teen Pregnancy in Haiti and Opportunities for Biopsychosocial Intervention

Adolescent girls in low-resource settings account for over 7.3 million births annually (generally unplanned). Unplanned teen pregnancies are increasing in lowresource settings. As part of a funded Round 20 Grand Challenges Exploration project (Healthy Minds for Adolescent Mothers), we investigated unplanned teen pregnancies in Haiti’s Cité Soleil shantytown, teens’ biopsychosocial challenges, and desirable interventions.
Contribution of Rural Women in Community Development in Haiti: Case Papaye Movement, Plateau Central, Haiti

This work has as main objective to understand, through a basic investigatory process, the role of rural women, who participate in the peasant Movement Papaye- in community development in rural areas in Haiti to lay the groundwork and data necessary in a subsequent intervention of any national or international organization which aims to improve the living conditions of this category. The role of women, not only in overall percentage of the population, the issue of activities for the country's development is essential.
