My dissertation titled "Mambos, Priestesses, and Goddesses: Spiritual Healing Through Vodou in Black Women's Narratives of Haiti and New Orleans" reclaims the practice of Vodou as an integral African spiritual tradition through fiction by black women writers. I discuss how the examination of Vodou necessitates the revision of colonial history, serves as an impetus for reevaluating the literary representation of the black female migrant subject, and gives voice to communities silenced by systemic oppression.

On considère volontiers que les femmes auraient été perpétuellement opprimées aux époques passées, et que la modernité seule les aurait libérées. Sans être tout à fait faux, ce schéma mérite néanmoins d’être nuancé. Outre que la période moderne n’a pas toujours été tendre avec la condition féminine, l’histoire nous donne aussi l’exemple de sociétés qui accordèrent au féminin une place bien plus positive qu’on ne l’imagine.

L’objectif principal de cette recherche est de comprendre et d’expliquer l’influence de la religion protestante sur le choix et le comportement des femmes protestantes en âge de procréer. Se référant à la vision judéo-chrétienne de la conception humaine stipulée dans la Genèselverset 28 : « Soyez féconds, multipliez, croissez, remplissez la terre, et assujettissezla», de nombreuses Églises protestantes en Haïti s’opposent à l’utilisation des moyens contraceptifs pour contrôler la fécondité.

The novel is about the coming of age of a young Haitian immigrant, Sophie Caco, who leaves Haiti to join her mother in the United States. The novel moves between two settings, New York and Haiti. Through Sophie and her female generational line (her mother, her aunt, and her grandmother) the novel articulates the struggle of Haitian and Haitian American women with rigid patriarchal values, and forms of sexual abuse that have been internalized by the women themselves.

In Haiti, History, and the Gods, Joan Dayan charts the cultural imagination of Haiti not only by reconstructing the island's history but by highlighting ambiguities and complexities that have been ignored. She investigates the confrontational space in which Haiti is created and recreated in fiction and fact, text and ritual, discourse and practice. Dayan's ambitious project is a research tour de force that gives human dimensions to this eighteenth-century French colony and provides a template for understanding the Haiti of today.

Studies on Haitian Vodou have documented its marginalization. In fact, they have tracked down the roots of its erasure - due in parts to the positioning of Haiti within an unleveled diffusion of globalized power, the choices of the Haitian state for declaring Roman Catholicism as the official religion of the country, imposed neoliberal policies, as well as poor economic orientations. Because of these external and internal factors, Haitian Vodou devotees have been forced to explore their spirituality outside of Haiti’s public sphere.

Along with the other authors in this volume, I aim to better understand the intersection of diaspora, race, and gender as defining forces in the lives of Black Pentecostal women. My focus is on how Haiti fares conceptually in one rather extreme yet influential strand of Pentecostal thought: Third Wave evangelicalism.
