Objective Although illegal abortion is believed to be widely practised in Haiti, few data exist on such practices. We aimed to learn about illegal abortion access, methods, and perceived barriers to abortion-related care. Additionally, we aimed to identify the proportion of unscheduled antepartum visits to a public hospital that were attributable to unsafe abortion in Cap Haitien, Haiti.

Women and girls are more adversely affected than men both during and in the aftermath of rapid-onset natural disasters. The international community has repeatedly called for women's voices to be included in relief and reconstruction efforts in both conflict and natural disaster settings to reduce this vulnerability. Despite this, the case of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti demonstrates that these calls have gone largely unheeded.

Throughout Haiti’s history, both policy and politics have undermined Haitian women’s liberty, authority, and agency to advocate for change. The country’s patterned governmental instability, combined with enduring gender roles and violence, has prevented the potency of women’s organization and full political participation, as well as social inclusion on a national scale.

In January 2010, Haiti experienced a phenomenon no living Haitian had ever known. A devastating earthquake of 7.0 magnitude ravaged the already destitute island nation, killing over 230,000, leaving over one million living in tent cities or open spaces, and affecting millions of Haitians on the island and in the diasporas. This study examines the trauma and resilience of women who survived Haiti’s 2010 earthquake and relocated to Boston, MA.

Within this thesis I explore the idea of using feminist fiction to further women's empowerment in the context of a developing area. Taking the use of feminist fiction as a conscious raising resource during the second wave of feminism in Canada, the United States and England as a starting point, I look to the canon of feminist fiction of Haiti as an unmined resource that may be used for similar purposes.

Pour les femmes haHiennes, la situation est encore plus critique.
